Birdseed + Dirt = Flowers

Did you ever think about what seeds are in your birdseed? I never have, but it's obviously seed from plants, flowers, etc. I put a bird feeder outside of the patio and the birds went nuts!! I'm not kidding, we had at least 40 birds on the patio at once. Doves, finches, bushtits, you name it we had it. Anywhooo...it became obvious that the seed was going everywhere. After awhile I had grass growing out of my pots and some lovely daisies. Who knew that birdseed would grow and bloom!!!

Sorry!!

I've been slammed with work plus boyfriend's b-day and Halloween. I have several things to share with you so please check back!!

Pots

Hello! I was at a BBQ this weekend at my friend Denise's house and we were talking about where to find large pots for planting, fountains, etc. My boyfriend happened across a large pot for a TV scene and the company name was Jackalope. Here is the link http://www.jackalope.com/pottery.html

Rant 1!

I'm not a rich person but let me tell you, if I had millions of dollars I would not be a tight-fisted wanker. I would share the wealth. I would buy my friends beverages, have a party with food and beverages and I might even hold your hair back after all the bevies and parties! I just don't get why some people are so tight-fisted. I understand that in no way, shape of form do I think that I am entitled to other people's money but my Lord, I think you can pick up a meal for $8 and give me a freaking break! Especially if you are making 40 times more than I am. The economy has not been so kind to some, so when I can, I like to think that I give just a little to help. Everyone's got to eat, you know, especially your friends! Ok, I am calm again!

TREES!

When we moved into the new place we were given 2 trees. One was a Magnolia, the other, a Kumquat. Both were looking a little sick until one day 2 weeks ago when they both bloomed...it's Summer! The Magnolia had these huge blooms, that came and went but brought with them lovely new green leaves. In the picture you can see the crappy brown leaves and the new green ones and the gorgeous flower! I was sure it was going to die but YAY, seems to be OK! I will post the Kumquat when the fruit turns orange!

ORCHIDS!!

I'm very excited to announce that I'm having a baby...and Orchid baby! I have nurtured this plant for YEARS! I have replanted with the orchid "bark" and added orchid food. I have watched the sun for it's best possible angle and adjusted the orchid to match. Are you understanding what I'm talking about? Do you...really?! Anywhooo, it's a Cymbidium Orchid and I'm pretty sure it's a beautiful white-pink color however it's been so long that I could be surprised. Orchids that I have seen love the sea air and diffused light. I bought this one...many years ago at the orchid farm that we frequent in Santa Barbara. And soon I will be able to remember the name of it but I've had some wine and have no idea where the receipt is! We don't get a lot of sea air here in Hollywood, so I've done my best. I'll keep you posted on this one!

Life in Hollywood

So...I came home the other night to find that someone had chopped down a tree in our backyard. Now this was a large Ficus tree that was on OUR property. I was SSSOOO mad, that I thought of calling the police and having them file a trespassing report. I was hoping that it had been a native California species because then it would have been REALLY bad. So after a glass of wine and a talk from my boyfriend, I decided to write a very nice (after revisions) email to my apartment manager and owner of the building. As it turns out, 20 emails and phone calls later, we found the culprit. It was the apartment manager behind us who hired IDIOTS to trim the tree. Clearly "trim" has several definitions. I am not pleased but at least...I got nothing...I'm still pissed and really upset about it. I hope they at least cut the rest of it down! STUPID PEOPLE!!!

Planting!

Hello! Today I will be replanting the back patio with the help of my cat Lily Belle...about time too! I've got three different types of Agapanthes, very exciting! As far as I know, there are 10 differnt varities of Agapanthes in the world, also know as the African Blue Lily. My Dad mamaged to snag the last flat of Impatients. I've got to move my Ash tree to a different part of the patio. We have a fan in the attic that blasts the hot air out to the patio and it's absolutely killing the tree and other flowers.

Does anyone know what this flower is called? I've been told several times that it's a Red Dragon but I don't think so. It also comes in a lovely lavender. Any thoughts would be very helpful!

Holy Pea Pods!!!

Wow, I planted some English Peas about 2 weeks ago, and BAM, they are huge! OK, maybe not huge but they have grown about three inches and, AND they already are forming pea pods!! The peas are on the right, White Polar Morning Glory on the left. I also planted some along the fence line in very crappy soil with gravel and they are sprouting there as well. The tomatoes I planted have NOT died! In fact they appear to be healthy and there is one tiny tomato that is growing. In the last blog I forgot to tell you, they are Roma tomatoes, I planted them so that the first inch of plant was down in the soil. They seem to like that, oh and I sing to them (thanks Brian for the suggestion). My tulips are on their way to actual flowers...I know! I bought them in an airport in Amsterdam last September and they have been in their travel container ever since. I planted them in February in their own pot and they are in partial shade. Who knew that they would be so awesome! But what's not awesome...my Cilantro, looks very sad and not sprouting, I may have over watered. I tend to do that when I'm bored. I think I'm going to put it outside in the sun for a bit and see if it dries the soil out a little. More later on the plant situation, thanks for reading!
My favorite flowers are the ones I get from my boyfriend, thanks baby!!

The garden

Today I will trying to plant some tomatoes. Now, I have tried before without much success. So this time, I'm trying some baby plants that seem to be pretty healthy that I found at Mission Nursery. I will be adding bamboo rods in a triangle above them for stability...if they grow that big, ha ha! Please feel free to give suggestions. Here is where I would post a picture of the progress, however I don't really know how to do that yet! Oh wait, let's see if this works...
